Waiting in the garden...and life

There’s so much waiting in the garden. Waiting for tomatoes to ripen. Waiting for melons to swell with sweetness. Waiting for rain. Then waiting for the rain to stop so I can harvest.

This rhythm of patience mirrors something deeper — a spiritual reality we live over and over again. The liturgical calendar is full of waiting: in Advent, we wait for Christ’s birth. In Lent, we wait for resurrection. In Pentecost, we wait for the Spirit. Already, not yet.

And in life? We wait. We wait to hear back from a job interview. We wait for Friday. We wait for summer. For healing. For clarity. For good news.

And so often, we aren’t in control of the “when.”

I was reminded of this whilst harvesting and listening to Lectio 365, in Acts 1:6-7:

“It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.”

It’s not for me to know when the tomato will ripen, or when the “whatever” in my own story will unfold.

But there is one thing we can be sure of in the waiting: God’s love is already here.  A bit of heaven is in us right now to borrow from last week’s sermon at the church I attend.

I saw it this week in a heart-shaped potato and two carrots curled together like they were hugging (see pics below). A reminder that in all the waiting, creation still surprises us with sweetness and affection.

So while we wait, let’s also look around — and delight in the quiet beauty, the sacred abundance, and the love that surrounds us.
